PWABUILDER ALTERNATIVE

PWABuilder alternative: SaasToStore vs PWABuilder

Is PWABuilder free? Yes — it's Microsoft's free, open-source tool, and it does a good job of turning a PWA into store packages. What it doesn't do is everything after the download: keeping your signing key safe, building the iOS app on a Mac, fixing Digital Asset Links once Google re-signs your app, and repeating all of it for every update. If that's why you're looking for a PWABuilder alternative, SaasToStore does the same job as a hosted service: paste your URL, get signed builds for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux and Android TV.

Is PWABuilder free?

The tool, yes: pwabuilder.com and its packaging service cost nothing, and the code is on GitHub under the MIT licence. The real cost sits around the packages it hands you:

  • Key custody. For Google Play, PWABuilder gives you a signing.keystore and a text file with its passwords. They are yours to store. Lose them, and the next update can't ship under the same listing until Google resets your upload key.
  • A fix after the first upload. Google Play re-signs your bundle, so you add the Play signing fingerprint to assetlinks.json on your server — otherwise the app opens with a browser address bar.
  • A Mac for iOS. The iOS output is a Swift Xcode project, which PWABuilder itself labels experimental. You compile, sign and archive it yourself.
  • Every update, again. A new version means regenerating the package, signing it with the same key and uploading it to each store, one by one.
  • The stores' own fees, which no tool removes — they're listed in the FAQ below.

None of this is a flaw: PWABuilder is a packager, by design. SaasToStore is a pipeline — the same packaging, plus the signing, the macOS build machines and the updates.

Why people look for a PWABuilder alternative

No Mac, no Xcode for the App Store

Most founders who ship a web app don't own a Mac, and setting up certificates and provisioning profiles in Xcode is a day of work the first time. With SaasToStore, the iOS app is compiled and signed on our build machines from the same URL as your Android app.

Updates without the ritual

Your content updates live, because the app loads your site. But store releases still happen — a new icon, a new target API level, a new permission. SHIP includes the first build plus 3 updates per platform for 12 months, and your keystore stays with us, encrypted and backed up — so an update never depends on a file someone saved on a laptop.

Desktop beyond the Microsoft Store

PWABuilder's desktop target is Windows. SaasToStore also builds a .dmg for macOS and an .AppImage for Linux, with Snap Store and Flathub packages.

Sites that aren't a full PWA yet

PWABuilder starts from a valid web manifest. SaasToStore reads what your site already has, and when a TWA isn't the right fit — typically no service worker — it builds a Capacitor native shell instead, so the Android app still ships.

Already published with PWABuilder? Keep your app

Moving doesn't mean starting over. If your app is already live on Google Play, SaasToStore continues its version numbering and gives you the upload certificate Google asks for in its "Request upload key reset" form. Your next update then ships under the same listing, with its reviews and installs. Keep PWABuilder's signing.keystore safe either way: it's the key Google knows today.

When PWABuilder is the right call

If you're a developer, comfortable with keystores and Xcode, targeting mainly the Microsoft Store or Meta Quest, and every euro counts, PWABuilder is excellent — SaasToStore relies on its engine for Microsoft Store packages. If you'd rather go from one URL to signed apps on every platform and let someone else run the builds and the updates, that's what SaasToStore is built for.

Frequently asked questions

Is PWABuilder free?+

Yes. PWABuilder is a free, open-source project from Microsoft, released under the MIT licence, and its packages cost nothing. What it leaves to you is everything after the download: keeping the signing key, building the iOS project on a Mac, and repeating the process for every update.

Which developer accounts do I need, with PWABuilder or SaasToStore?+

The same ones whichever tool you use, because the stores require them to publish under your name: a Google Play Console account ($25 one-time), an Apple Developer Program membership ($99 a year) for the App Store, and a Microsoft Store developer account — free for individuals since 2025, $99 one-time for companies. SaasToStore only asks for them when you publish, once your builds are done.

Does SaasToStore use PWABuilder?+

For one store, yes: SaasToStore generates the Microsoft Store MSIX with the PWABuilder engine. Everything around it is ours — the signed Android bundle, the iOS build, the desktop installers, the keystore management and the updates.

Do I need a Mac to publish my PWA to the App Store?+

With PWABuilder, yes: its iOS package is a Swift Xcode project, labelled experimental, that you compile, sign and archive on a Mac with Xcode. With SaasToStore, no: the iPhone app is compiled and signed on our macOS build machines and you download a signed .ipa.

Is PWABuilder's Android app a TWA?+

Yes. PWABuilder's Google Play package is a Trusted Web Activity generated with Bubblewrap, Google's TWA tool. SaasToStore builds its TWAs with Bubblewrap too, and switches to a Capacitor native shell when your site has no service worker.

Can I move an app I published with PWABuilder to SaasToStore?+

Yes, without losing the listing. SaasToStore continues your app's version numbering and gives you the upload certificate Google asks for in its 'Request upload key reset' form, so your next update ships under the same Google Play listing, with its reviews and installs.

What does SaasToStore cost compared to PWABuilder?+

PWABuilder is free. SaasToStore starts with a free Android test build, then SHIP costs €39 one-time per app: Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux and Android TV, the first build plus 3 updates per platform, valid 12 months.

Which should I choose?+

PWABuilder, if you're a developer who is happy to manage keys, run Xcode and resubmit each update yourself — it's excellent and free. SaasToStore, if you'd rather paste a URL and get signed builds for every platform, with the updates handled.
